The benefit of a driver improvement course

On Behalf of Tickle Law Office, PLLC | Jun 10, 2021 | Firm News

Traffic tickets may not seem like a big deal until they accumulate to the point where they begin to affect driver privileges. An excessive number of tickets can substantially increase the number of points on driver records.

Under specific circumstances, people may have eligibility to participate in a driver improvement course. Knowing the benefit of this educational resource may incentivize people to take advantage of the opportunity.

Driving records

Legal driving records in North Carolina maintain documentation of everyone’s driving history. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a person’s driving record could include the following:

  • Traffic accident reports
  • Driver’s license number
  • Traffic violations
  • Driver’s license status
  • Name and address
  • Motor vehicle-related convictions

Depending on the type of traffic violations people commit, a certain number of points reflects on their record. Once this number exceeds the legal maximum, people risk suspension or revocation of their driving privileges. If they violate the conditions of their legal requirements, they could face serious consequences including costly fines and jail time.

Course advantages

A driver improvement course addresses general topics of operating a motor vehicle. It may also include information about state traffic laws and restrictions. Educational instruction regarding driver behavior can teach participants about the dangers of irresponsible driving practices.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, in addition to the educational opportunity, successful completion of a qualified course may help drivers to reduce the number of points on their driving record. Drivers must meet certain requirements to attain eligibility to participate and can only complete a clinic once every five years.
