A joint criminal investigation has led to the arrest of three people for drug crimes on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at Brooklen Avenue in Mount Airy, North Carolina. During the arrest, the police discovered large amounts of cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl.
The arrest was a part of the joint investigation between the narcotics divisions of the Mount Airy Police Department and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office. The probe resulted in the seizure of over 50 grams of methamphetamine, a large amount of fentanyl and crack cocaine.
One of the suspects is facing three felony charges. The first is for trafficking methamphetamine, another for trafficking opium or heroin and lastly for possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. They are facing another charge for possessing drug paraphernalia.

In the state, having Schedule I drugs like lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) can lead to five years in jail and a fine. Selling or distributing these drugs has a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
Possessing Schedule II drugs has a punishment of a fine and two years in jail. However, the jail time can be longer if there are more drugs involved. For example, having over one gram of cocaine is a more serious crime with a penalty of up to five years of incarceration.
Schedule II drugs include codeine, morphine and speed. In North Carolina, selling these drugs is a serious crime and distributing them has a punishment of a ten-year jail time.
